Lokum

Pit Mix, Layers of Genius

Lokum came to us as a puppy with her mom and sibling. Their mom was being cared for at a local school, but the kids couldn’t resist taking the puppies home without her. When the situation became unsustainable, we were asked to take them in “just until they were big enough” — but of course, that never happened. Instead of sending them back to the streets, we kept them.

Lokum is a Pit mix and one of the first puppies I ever raised. I’ll admit: I misunderstood her for a long time. She and another dog here, Poppy, never got along — and I assumed Lokum was the instigator. But after years of watching, reading, and learning, I realized she was unfairly judged. Lokum is actually one of the cleverest dogs here: quick to learn, affectionate, and deeply layered. She’s skeptical at first (and who wouldn’t be, after being blamed for things that weren’t her fault?), but once she trusts you, she’s all heart.

Underneath that caution, she’s brilliant. Lokum is one of the most intelligent dogs here — quick to learn, curious, and brave. She has this way of looking at you that’s both piercing and tender, like she’s waiting for you to see her for who she really is. She’s affectionate, playful, and has layers upon layers, like an onion — every one you peel back reveals something better.

And then there’s her love for water: she spots a lake, and she’s gone, sprinting like a kid who just cannonballed out of school for the summer. No hesitation, just joy.

Lokum is a compact powerhouse of brains, loyalty, and heart — basically the canine version of a Turkish Delight: small, surprising, and full of flavor. She needs a family who won’t repeat my mistake of judging too quickly. If you give her patience, consistency, and love, she’ll give you everything back tenfold.
